Weds 17th Aug - Canyon Tea Rooms

Winter has come back again today (not that you're notice it in the house) and mum had to go and get changed into something cosier once she'd ventured outside and discovered how chilly it was. She has also developed a cold.

In the morning we had some shopping chores to do around Rocky. We bought such varied holiday essentials as cat litter (the clumping variety), a bumper pack of tylenol day/night nurse (like our day/night nurse but without the ingredients that are banned in Canada), coffees at Tim Horton's (Mollie had never heard of cappuccino would you believe), stamps with cute polar bears on for mum's mammoth list of postcards, neglected so far, and presents for Paul and Andy. I won't say what we got in case it spoils the surprise and excited anticipation.

We also tried to track down Susan's mural of Rocky which she was commissioned to do last year (Susan is a cousin, Peggy's daughter, Peter's sister and is a professional artist). The original was quite small but it was enlarged and is apparently on display in the hockey stadium, but it was all locked up. The original was nowhere to be found either - well, it must be somewhere but the only places we could think of to look were the tourist information office or the museum, and neither of them had any idea what we were talking about. Even weirder, nobody we've spoken to in the town seems to know anything about any local anniversary that took place last year. I'm not sure what anniversary it was, of the town, the local area or someone famous like David Thompson, but it was definitely Rocky Mountain House that commissioned the mural so it must have been for something significant. It was a shame that we couldn't find it. Her pictures are amazing, mostly in pencil, and are really delicate and detailed. And I feel kind of proud my cousin can do stuff like that.

Mollie's Favourite is Pea Soup

After another pea soup and cracker lunch (I really don't like pea soup) we headed off for more pleasant things.
Eating tasty Pie

We had afternoon tea at the Grapevine Tearooms (on the 22 out the other side of Rocky). It was a really pretty cafe full of antiques and other nice things for sale and we sat on the balcony out the back and had tea and cakes with rosemarie. The best cake was a rhubarb custard pie, yum yum yum, and I got the recipe off the owner, who is called something like Rosella.

The Stream
Mum and I went for a little explore down to a stream behind the cafe, and Rosemarie showed us photos of a 'high tea' bridal shower they had had there. Rosella had to research what a high
tea actually entailed, and tried to do it all just so with nice rose-covered china, scones and cucumber sandwiches. They had even made a fascinator for each guest using bits and pieces from the dime store (some of them looked better than some of the really expensive ones).

An Attractive Mushroom

Mollie & Mum putting the
World to Rights

The evening saw Danny cooking us his famous stir fry with rice and Billy's scallops wrapped in bacon. Very tasty. Then Shirley and her husband Bill popped over and we had a chat until Mollie went to nest.
Mum is now launching an assault on her postcards. And would you believe it, the co-op appear to have stopped their free wifi. Hmm.
