Last night's storm carried on for quite a while and late this morning there were a couple of little heaps of hail still frozen, even though the temperature hadn't fallen that much.
I started the day with reading in bed (The Thread by Victoria Hislop) and putting off getting up until I realised mum and Molly were both up and dressed and waiting to have breakfast. Oops. We had important business to attend to eg the making of sandwiches etc before departure to crescent falls, which are just off highway 11 past Nordegg. Just before we left a social worker popped in to see Molly (they come a couple of times on Tuesday and Wednesday because those are the days she doesn't see someone else like Lynn or Shirley. They come to sort something for her to eat and make sure she's ok, so while they were having a little chat I made our lunch up - cheese rolls or sandwiches, the left overs from our nibble tray, bananas, oatmeal and raisin cookies and some ginger pop from one of the boots in the hall.
The journey to Crescent Falls was uneventful in that it was following the same road for the entire route and that road was pretty straight, so the driving was quite boring, but as we neared the mountains the lovely clear blue sky clouded over and by the time we arrived at the falls it was pouring with rain. However as good stiff upper lip types we ventured out with our picnic and stayed put at the picnic table until we were done even though it kept threatening to rain a lot harder. Molly particularly liked the cookies (wise choice). As soon as we finished and went to shelter under some trees, the rain stopped.
We made our way to each of the viewing points, stopped to look and take photos and chat a bit at each one, and the sun even started to come out. Mum and I have been to the falls before too but it was really nice to visit them again and still nice looking at the views and seeing how close you can get to the edge.
We headed back, stopping by another viewing point for the river high up at the top of the gorge just downriver of the falls. We paid a quick visit to the amazingly blue Abraham Lake and we also made a detour off the 11 to Bighorn Dam to get a different view of the lake, but the sky was clouding over again so you couldn't see the blue colour as well.
We went to the co-op on the way back and got some essentials for this evening. We'd been planning to make a shepherd's pie but had kind of run out of time, so while Molly fed the cats I made some omelettes. We ate them and then sat and chatted until WELL past Molly's bedtime (9.26 to be precise). Many tales were told of the hardships faced back in the day in England and here, and Molly was on very good form.
The thunder has started up again and as last night all the indoor cats (Tinker, Zoe and Gonzo) have taken up residence on Molly's bed. Just in case.
Mum and I are waiting for the weather to kick off but it's taking its time and now mum has written her first postcard of the holiday it must be time to nest.
