Tues 14 Aug - Calgary

We got to Calgary at about 8 yesterday evening and were met by a whole welcoming committee of Pat, Earl, Nancy and Tom. (Pat's mum was Mum's granny's sister - Earl is her husband and Tom and Nancy are two of their children). We saw a dog driving a car as we left the airport and a giant rabbit that I mistook for a deer and started to doubt our sanity. We managed to stay awake pretty much until normal bedtime but were glad when that came around.
Andy is staying at Nancy's this time while me and Mum are at Pat and Earl's but they came round first thing for a coffee and some toast with Peggy's raspberry jam on (Peggy and Pat are sisters) and after a quick game of tonka and a bit of putting the world to rights we popped out with Nancy who was off to the mall to buy bras.
We were tempted by kitchen gadgets ate freshly made cinnamon buns and petted some of the very cute animals in the pet shop including a hedgehog (do people actually keep hedgehogs as pets?!). There was a lady carrying her kitten around in her handbag who appeared to have brought it to the pet shop for a visit. Nancy alsomanaged to find some very nice 2-for-1 bras in La Senza, and we bought the biggest ever bag of caramel flavoured popcorn to take when we go to the lake to visit Roxanne et al (Tom's family) later in the week. Not sure how much there will be left.
While we were safely in the mall the lovely sunny hot weather had sneaked off, and as we headed to the farmers' market we watched some low scuddy little clouds threatening us with a tornado. Luckily it never materialised but it suddenly got rainy and windy and the temperature dropped by about 15C and we were left shivering in our shorts and flip flops so didn't hang around at the market for long.
We went to Nancy's house to shut the windows and say hi to her cat (Nova) and she gave us a little piano playing demo - she's only been having lessons since January and has learnt loads. The storm had knocked branches off trees and blown over the wheely bins but can't have been as bad as the hail storm they had a few days ago where golf ball sized hailstones went straight through some of the plastic garden furniture and the car port roofing.
The evening saw Tom back and all of us playing tonka again, this time fuelled by lasagne and Baileys but sadly even these measures were still not enough to secure a British win. We taste tested the weird chocolate and opinions were varied...in general salt came out on top closely followed by chilli, with wasabi coming a sad third.
