Our big treat for this morning was Earl's amazing pancakes complete with multiple fruit syrups, maple syrup, crispy bacon and sausages. YUM! Apparently Earl was worried about how the pancakes would turn out but he needn't have worried, they were as tasty as ever. This morning is the last one we'll all be there together as andy is off home before mum and I go back and Nancy is going away on holiday too.
We picked up our hire car from enterprise (sadly not a bright red jeep this time) and got some cold pills for andy and a lead so we can play country tunes in the car then headed off.
Today saw more accidents on the motorway including a jackknifed giant caravan which had flipped over and lost its wheelbase, and a u-haul which had got out of control and scraped all along the neighbouring car. Plus of course the car that had run into the back of another car while queuing behind one of the other accidents. All go. We stopped off at Glenn's for lunch (yes, amazingly breakfast had gone down) and mum decided to opt for the lighter option of a cinnamon bun with a nice cup of tea. When it turned up it was so amazingly huge we had to take photos of it - it was really tasty but as the waitress said, most people order it to share between 2 or 3. What a blessing unsuspecting foreigners are for local businesses.
We arrived in Rocky at about 4, and quickly checked in at our motel (Rocky Inn Express) which seems pretty nice, and comes complete with big pots at the front full of real flowers interspersed with plastic ones, often in the same pot, and a random canary in a little cage.
We were at Molly's just after 4 (we were due to arrive between 2 and 4, but no answer when we phoned to say we'd be a little bit late, so had rushed in case Molly was worrying where we were). There was a note on the door saying she'd gone out with Rosemarie for an ice cream at 3 and would be back at 4, but in the end they got distracted at Crimson Lake and didn't get back until 5 or so. We thought it was a bit bizarre, especially because the front and back doors had been left open and there was an undrunk cup of tea in the front room, but there wasn't much to be done except wait so we did it out outside in the sun.
We all went out to dinner at Nick and Leslie's (Molly's favourite restaurant, which also featured heavily in the Rocky section of the blog last time) and mum and I had the smallest possible item on the menu (a cup of soup), as we were still recovering from lunch (I had selflessly helped out with the cinnamon bun after finishing my own food). Andy had the 'half portion' of baked spaghetti that I felt compelled to photograph last time. Chatting to Molly was quite difficult - she is really struggling to hear anything we say. She must have relaxed over the course of the meal though because things seemed to improve. She recently got a new hearing aid...it must have been incredibly bad before that. Other than the hearing, she seems to be in pretty good shape for a 90 year old. Her sight has got a bit worse but she's still reading books (albeit very slowly) on her magnifying reading gadget, and she still has lots of stories to tell once she knows what the topic of conversation is.
After we'd taken her Molly home and had a bit of a chat it was time for her to go to bed, so popped round to Pat and Hamish's rather then phoning to arrange a visit as we were so close. I think we took them a bit by surprise turning up out of the blue, especially as they were about to have dinner, but it was really good to see them both again and catch up with what everyone has been up to. We ended up having a long chat and we arranged to go back tomorrow afternoon for coffee and more toe licking from Polly the mini poodle.
We went back to the motel via the neighbouring liquor store where you have to brave a walk in freezer to get a chilled bottle of wine. It seemed really warm when we came out - it's been about 30c today but is meant to fall to 2c tonight.
