Thurs 4th April - And we're off!

The epic journey began yesterday afternoon with a trekette up to Birmingham. We decided to do that because the holidays are so much cheaper if you start from there...probably because the flight turns out to be with Monarch, who apparently have seats only suitable for midgets (even the woman on the check in desk suggested we both went for aisle seats rather than sitting next to each other).

Anyway it had the added bonus of dinner and a lovely evening and quite a lot of wine with Danny, Paul's childhood friend from Ireland, and his other half Fae. And their two very beautiful huskies Misty and Shadow. Danny even gave us a lift to the airport this morning at 5.30...! And we are now enjoying pret a manger almond croissants and coffee and playing on our techie gadgets.

Evening update! We're now here, it's a balmy 25°C and we're in the Ghazala Beach Hotel, unfortunately with a twin room but with promises of a switch tomorrow. And there are nice bed decorations.

We checked out the beach strip along Na'ama Bay that our hotel backs onto. Lots of people trying to get us into their restaurants and it all seems pretty quiet given that it is the ideal time to come here (not too hot yet and v good diving conditions). We went to Sinai Divers which is just next to our hotel and had great reviews, but the guy there implied it would be better (= cheaper) to prebook online. We went away to try to go that but couldn't get out to work and then went back and it was shut. One of the instructors had just returned from a night dive and said to come back first thing in the morning.

We finished the evening with what promised to be a delicious plate of calamari but turned out to be an offputtingly rubbery and unseasoned plate of very thick grilled rolls of squid. We managed about a quarter, then started feeding the cat that was under our table but even he wasn't keen.

Diving tomorrow though! :-)
